Local bowls club opens to the general public on Wednesday evenings
Fancy trying out lawn bowls in a friendly and welcoming environment? The Woolwich and Plumstead Bowls Club has opened its doors to the general public on Wednesday evenings until the end of September so people can try out the game.

The club was established over 105 years ago and during those years members have enjoyed a sport which is relatively low cost compared to other leisure activities, but more importantly provides a social environment for all to enjoy. Located in Foxcroft Road off Shrewsbury Lane SE18, many local people who live in the Shooters Hill area do not know of the club's existence! There are also many who would like to try out their skills on the bowling green but are put off by the traditional dress code, the minimum being grey trousers or skirts and white above the waist.
Every Wednesday evening from 6pm members, friends and family can go along to the club and give the game of lawn bowls a try. This is your chance to try out bowls for yourself. Bring a pair of smooth soled, soft shoes - no other dress code is required. In effect it is the club's 'dress down' evening and one which suits those keen to try bowls without any immediate expense.
Participants can also take up the offer of full playing membership for a special £20 subscription until 2011. This includes the winter social season.
If you are interested in the Wednesday sessions, or taking advantage of the special subscription, contact any of the club members: Doreen Edwards 020 8302 7092, Frank Freshwater 020 8303 8490, Tom Smyth 020 8854 9964 or email Tom: smytom@hotmail.co.uk
The bowls season, which begins late April and continues through to end of September, includes matches with other bowls clubs mainly in south was London but with the occasional day out to Hearn Bay and other locations. The opportunity to compete in local and county-wide competitions adds a bit of excitement to the game, with the season ending in the last week in September.
